Institutional White Paper · March 2026

Ranking Methodology

The Global Commodity Trader Index applies a fixed, transparent weighting system across six institutional-grade pillars and thirty discrete metrics to produce a single, authoritative composite score for each firm.

Category Weight Distribution

The six pillars are fixed and non-adjustable. Weights reflect the editorial consensus of the Index Committee, reviewed annually.

High-level breakdown of how dimension groups contribute to the final index score.

Dimension GroupWeightRationale
Market Power & Volume40%Reflects the firm's systemic importance, trading clout, and ability to move markets.
Logistics & Infrastructure30%Physical execution capability, storage, fleet, and last-mile delivery performance.
ESG & Carbon Intensity20%Net Zero trajectory, Scope 3 exposure, deforestation linkage, and water stewardship.
Governance & Stability10%Compliance robustness, political independence, executive continuity, and human capital.

Carbon Intensity: Cross-Sector Metric

Carbon Intensity is treated as a universal cross-sector metric applied to all four sectors in the GCTI universe: Energy, Metals/Mining, Agriculture, and Livestock. It is defined as a normalised 0 to 100 score reflecting a firm's demonstrated progress toward Net Zero, incorporating Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions intensity per unit of revenue, alongside an integrity assessment of any carbon credits used for offsetting purposes. A score of 100 denotes full Net Zero alignment with verified offset integrity; a score below 40 indicates material laggard status with inadequate transition planning.

Operational Excellence: Supply Chain Traceability

Livestock & Agriculture Sectors

For firms operating in the Livestock and Agriculture sectors, the GCTI applies an additional sub-weighting layer under Operational Excellence for Supply Chain Traceability. This measures the firm's ability to trace commodity origin from farm or feedlot to end buyer, including deforestation-free sourcing certifications (e.g. RTRS, Rainforest Alliance), animal welfare audit coverage, and the deployment of blockchain or digital traceability platforms across Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers. Firms with full farm-level traceability and third-party certification receive a material scoring uplift within the Deforestation Linkage and Human Rights Audit sub-metrics.

Data Collection Process

The Trust Framework

The GCTI Trust Framework is a proprietary methodology developed in consultation with institutional investors, commodity trade finance banks, and independent compliance practitioners. It governs how each of the thirty metrics is sourced, validated, and normalised before being fed into the composite scoring algorithm.

Metrics are classified as either Hard Data, sourced from audited financial statements, regulatory filings, exchange-reported volumes, and verified third-party databases, or Perception Metrics, derived from the annual GCTI Expert Panel Survey, a structured questionnaire administered to over 200 commodity trade professionals, compliance officers, and sovereign wealth allocators.

Scores are normalised to a 0–100 scale using a peer-relative min-max framework, ensuring that rankings reflect relative standing within the universe of tracked firms rather than absolute performance thresholds. Inverse metrics (e.g. Sovereign Debt Exposure) are recalculated so that a higher score always denotes a more favourable position. All data is reviewed quarterly, with material restatements applied retrospectively.
